A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
